Welcome to Our Open Conversations
We are determined to make Birmingham and Solihull the best place to work in health and social care. We know this means making changes to address our performance and cultural challenges. Our Open Conversations are open to everyone who works or volunteers in health and care in the NHS, Local Authorities and the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector across Birmingham and Solihull.
Through this second Conversation, everyone can discuss and feed into the pledges that have been drafted to make working and volunteering in health and care in Birmingham and Solihull the best place to be. These pledges have been drafted based on the insights provided by the people who participated in the first Conversation.
This Conversation will be open for two weeks, from 23 April until 11.59pm on 9 May. Registrations are now open.

Why are we doing this?
We want to have an honest, two-way dialogue with our workforce. It is our people who are best placed to tell us how we can make health and care in Birmingham and Solihull the best place to work.
Our Open Conversations allow us to tap into the wisdom of our staff and volunteers to unlock the answers to many of the challenges we face. By hearing our staff and volunteer's ideas, thoughts and comments we have been able to draft a series of pledges that will create a positive change and help make every part of health and care in Birmingham and Solihull the best place to work. Watch the videos to hear from your leaders about their commitment to the Conversation and the pledges.
This is our second Open Conversation, in which you can share your thoughts on our draft pledges. Your participation in this Conversation is essential to ensure we are making the right changes and are committed to the right goals.
How does it work?
Through the Conversation platform, every single volunteer and member of our workforce can safely, openly and anonymously share their opinions and ideas.
The second Conversation uses the same platform as the first one, but the way we participate is slightly different. Rather than discussing new ideas, this time we are checking and challenging the draft pledges. Everyone can read the pledges, vote on each pledge, and share thoughts, reactions, and suggestions in the comments.
The Conversation is facilitated by our independent partner, Clever Together, who will help you expand on your ideas and analyse everything that is shared at the end.
The Conversation is…
- Anonymous – your name is not attached to anything you share
- For ALL staff and volunteers across health and social care in Birmingham and Solihull
- The chance to share your own ideas as well as read, vote and comment on the ideas of others
- Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week while the Conversation is live
- Accessible from wherever you may be, on any computer, tablet or smartphone
- Analysed independently - so you can feel safe to share what you really feel
What will come next?
As with the first Conversation, all contributions will once again be analysed and presented in a second report. We’ll take these insights and produce a final version of the pledges that have been truly co-created by our people.
In September 2024 the final pledges will be officially rolled out system-wide. They will be communicated to all staff and volunteers across the system and integrated into our projects and ways of working. These pledges will represent the priorities and ideas of our people, so everyone can get behind them and commit to making the changes we want to see.
